London Blue Topaz: What It Is and Why It Makes a Perfect Cocktail Ring
Vazgen Martirosov
Saturday evening. The dress is on, the shoes are by the door, and your hands look like they're waiting for something. Not another thin band. Something with colour, something people notice when you lift a glass.
Quick answer: London blue topaz is the deepest, inkiest shade of blue topaz, a natural gemstone that is hard enough for everyday rings (8 on the Mohs scale) and rich enough in colour to anchor a statement piece. That's why it's a favourite for a cocktail ring: a bold ring made to be seen. Our London blue topaz cocktail ring set pairs it with bright Swiss blue topaz and natural diamonds in two stackable white gold rings. Below: what London blue topaz is, how it compares with other blue topaz, how hard topaz really is, what a cocktail ring is and how to wear one, and how to clean a blue topaz ring.
What is London blue topaz?
Topaz is a natural mineral that comes in many colours, but in nature it's most often colourless or pale brown. London blue topaz is the name for its darkest blue: a deep, slightly grey-blue, like the sky an hour after sunset. It's the most saturated of the blue shades, and usually the most prized.
Here's the honest part, and it matters whenever you buy blue topaz: natural blue topaz is rare. Almost all blue topaz in jewellery is natural topaz whose blue colour has been created by a standard treatment, irradiation followed by gentle heating. GIA's overview of gem treatments explains how blue topaz starts out colourless and is then irradiated and heated. It's accepted across the trade, the colour is stable in normal wear, and it's the reason a large, rich blue stone stays affordable. A good seller tells you this upfront. We just did.
So what is London blue topaz, in one line? A natural topaz in the deepest blue the stone can wear, chosen for its depth, sparkle and toughness.
London blue vs Swiss blue vs sky blue topaz
Blue topaz comes in three main shades, and the names tell you how deep the colour goes:
| Shade | Looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sky blue topaz | Pale, soft, almost icy blue | Delicate everyday pieces |
| Swiss blue topaz | Bright, clear, vivid mid-blue | A fresh pop of colour that works by day |
| London blue topaz | Deep, dark, slightly grey-blue | Evening rings and statement pieces |
Swiss blue is cheerful and bright; London blue is moody and elegant. Our set uses both on purpose: the darker ring brings depth, the Swiss blue ring brings light, and together they look like the sky going from afternoon to evening.
Topaz hardness: can you wear a blue topaz ring every day?
Gem hardness is measured on the Mohs scale from 1 to 10. Topaz hardness is 8, as listed in GIA's topaz guide. That makes it harder than quartz and far harder than gold itself:
| Material | Mohs hardness | What that means in a ring |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 10 | Hardest natural material; resists scratches best |
| Sapphire | 9 | Very tough for everyday rings |
| Topaz | 8 | Hard enough for daily wear with sensible care |
| Quartz (incl. dust) | 7 | Everyday dust can't scratch topaz |
| Gold | 2.5–3 | The metal scratches long before the stone |
So, what is the hardness of topaz in real life? It means everyday dust won't scratch it, which is why topaz keeps its polish for years. The one thing to know: topaz has what Geology.com describes as perfect cleavage, a direction in which a sharp blow can split it. Hard, not invincible. Take a blue topaz ring off for the gym, sport, gardening and moving furniture, and it will stay beautiful.
What is a cocktail ring?
A cocktail ring is a large, eye-catching ring, usually with a big coloured gemstone or a cluster of stones, designed to be noticed. The name goes back to the 1920s, when women wore bold rings to cocktail parties as a statement, and a ring that caught the light every time you lifted your glass was the whole point.
So, what is a cocktail ring today? Any ring that is the star of your outfit rather than a supporting act: wide, colourful, sparkling, and usually worn on its own on the right hand, so it doesn't compete with an engagement ring.
How to wear a cocktail ring (and a blue topaz ring)
- Right hand, middle or ring finger. The classic spot, where it gets the most attention and doesn't crowd your wedding rings.
- Let it lead. Keep other jewellery simple: small earrings, a fine chain like our 18K gold chains, and the ring does the talking.
- Match the metal. Blue topaz looks crisp and cool in white gold, the same white as the diamonds around it.
- Day or night. A cocktail ring isn't only for parties. A single Swiss blue topaz band works with a white shirt on a Tuesday.
That last point is why we made our set as two rings. Stacked, the two bands become one wide blue topaz ring for evenings. Split, the Swiss blue band is light enough for every day, and the London blue band adds a deeper, dressier touch. Two rings, three ways to wear them.
Why diamonds around the topaz?
Both bands in our set are edged with small natural diamonds, 0.44 ct in total, in a pavé setting. Pavé (French for "paved") means rows of tiny diamonds set close together and held by tiny beads of metal, so the band itself sparkles. Because the diamonds are small and set close together, it's worth having a jeweller check them now and then, and taking the rings off for heavy lifting.
The white sparkle frames the blue, the way a white mat frames a painting. It makes London blue look deeper and Swiss blue look brighter.
How to choose a blue topaz ring
- Colour first. Pick the shade you love: London blue for depth, Swiss blue for brightness, or both.
- Clarity. Good blue topaz is usually "eye-clean", with no inclusions you can see without magnification.
- Cut. A well-cut stone sparkles evenly across its face, with no dull, dark window in the middle.
- The setting. Solid gold and secure prongs protect the stone; pavé diamonds add sparkle.
GIA's guide to topaz quality factors goes deeper into colour, clarity and cut. And if you're choosing a metal, our guides to white gold vs yellow gold and 14K vs 18K gold will help.
How to clean a blue topaz ring
Here's how to clean a blue topaz ring without risking the stone or the diamonds:
- Mix warm (not hot) water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid.
- Soak the ring for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, especially behind the stones where lotion builds up.
- Rinse in clean water (plug in the sink first) and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Skip ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and sudden temperature changes: they can stress topaz along its cleavage and loosen small pavé diamonds. Keep the ring away from strong heat, too. Store each ring on its own, because diamonds can scratch topaz and topaz can scratch gold.

Frequently asked questions
Is London blue topaz a natural stone?
Yes, it's natural topaz. Like almost all blue topaz on the market, its deep colour is created by a standard treatment (irradiation and heat), which is accepted across the jewellery trade and stable in normal wear.
What is the hardness of topaz?
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, harder than quartz and far harder than gold. It resists everyday scratches well, but a sharp knock can split it, so take it off for sport and heavy work.
Can you wear a blue topaz ring every day?
Yes, with sensible care. Topaz is hard enough for daily wear; just remove the ring for the gym, cleaning with chemicals and anything that could knock it hard.
What finger do you wear a cocktail ring on?
Traditionally the middle or ring finger of the right hand, so it stands out and doesn't compete with an engagement ring. In the end, wear it wherever you feel it looks best.
What is the difference between London blue and Swiss blue topaz?
London blue is the darkest, deepest shade of blue topaz, with a slightly grey tone. Swiss blue is brighter and lighter, a vivid clear blue. Our ring set combines both.
Is blue topaz a birthstone?
Yes. According to GIA, blue topaz is a birthstone for December, while precious topaz is a birthstone for November, which makes a blue topaz ring a thoughtful birthday gift.
