The moment every tradition agrees on: the ring slides onto the fourth finger. Which hand depends on where you say yes. (Photo: Jeongim Kwon, Unsplash)

He has the ring ready, the words ready, the evening planned. Then a small question stops him in the shop: when she says yes, which hand does it go on? It sounds simple. Ask a couple in London and a couple in Moscow, and you will get two different answers.

Quick answer: what hand does a wedding ring go on depends on where you live. In the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, France and Italy, both the engagement ring and the wedding ring go on the fourth finger of the left hand, the ring finger. In Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Serbia, Poland, India and much of Orthodox Eastern Europe, the wedding ring goes on the right hand. In Germany and Brazil, couples switch hands on the wedding day. See the full country table below, or try a ring on in our rings collection.

There is no wrong hand, only different traditions. Here is how they work, where they come from, and how to wear your rings once both are on.

Which finger is the ring finger?

The engagement ring finger is the fourth finger, counting the thumb as the first. It sits between the middle finger and the little finger. Some people call it the third finger, because they don't count the thumb. Same finger, different counting.

That part is almost universal. Whatever hand a country uses, the ring goes on the ring finger of that hand. What changes from country to country is the hand, and sometimes the moment the ring moves from one hand to the other.

What finger does an engagement ring go on?

In most English-speaking countries, the engagement ring goes on the left ring finger from the day of the proposal. It stays there through the engagement, and the wedding band joins it on the same finger after the ceremony.

In other places, the engagement ring starts on one hand and moves later. In Germany, it is usually worn on the left during the engagement and the wedding ring goes on the right. In Brazil and Colombia, it is the other way round: the engagement ring sits on the right, and it moves to the left once the couple is married. So "what hand and finger does an engagement ring go on" really has two answers: the finger is almost always the fourth, and the hand follows your local custom.

Wedding ring on right hand: what it means

If you see a wedding ring on someone's right hand, it usually doesn't mean anything is wrong. In most cases it simply means they come from a country where the right hand is the wedding hand.

The reason is old and mostly religious. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the right hand stands for blessing, strength and honour, so that is where the rings are placed during the service. The Orthodox Church in America explains that Orthodox Christians traditionally wear their wedding rings on the right hand. Russia, Ukraine, Greece and Serbia follow this custom, and so do many Catholic and Protestant families in Poland, Germany and Austria.

A few other meanings to know:

  • A widow or widower sometimes moves the ring to the other hand after losing a partner. In Russia, for example, some widows switch it to the left.
  • A "right-hand ring" can also be a ring a woman buys for herself, with no wedding meaning at all. It is a milestone ring, and a lovely one.
  • Practical reasons count too: a swollen knuckle, an injury or a job that is hard on the hands.

How we wear rings in Armenia

We have been making rings in Yerevan since 2010, so this is the part we know best. In Armenia, most couples wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring on the right hand, the same as in Russia and much of the region. The engagement, or nshandreq, is a big family celebration of its own, and the ring given there is worn on the right ring finger from that day.

At the church wedding, the couple's right hands are joined and the rings are blessed by the priest. Afterwards the wedding band usually sits next to the engagement ring on the same right-hand finger. In the diaspora, many Armenian families in the US and France follow the local custom and wear their rings on the left, which is completely fine.

That is also why many of our customers ask us to make the wedding band to match the engagement ring: the two will live side by side for a long time.

Why the left hand? The "vein of love" story

The left-hand tradition is usually traced back to the Romans. They believed a vein ran straight from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart, and they called it the vena amoris, the "vein of love".

It is a beautiful idea. It is also not true: every finger has veins, and none of them has a private line to the heart. But the story stuck, and through the centuries the left ring finger became the engagement finger in much of Western Europe and, later, America.

There is a practical reason too. Most people are right-handed, so a ring on the left hand gets fewer knocks, scratches and bumps. For a ring with a diamond and a pavé band, that matters.

What hand do you wear your wedding ring on after the ceremony?

Most couples wear the wedding ring and engagement ring together on the same finger once they are married. The usual order:

  • Wedding band first, closest to the palm and, as the saying goes, closest to the heart.
  • Engagement ring on top, towards the fingertip.

On the wedding day, many brides move the engagement ring to the other hand before the ceremony, so the band can go on first. Afterwards, the engagement ring goes back on top of it.

Some people prefer the opposite order, or wear one ring on each hand. Both are fine. What about men and same-sex couples?

Men follow the same hand as their country: the left ring finger in the US and UK, the right in Russia, Armenia, Germany and Poland. Men's engagement rings are becoming more common, and they go on the same finger the wedding band will.

Same-sex couples have no fixed rule. Many follow their local custom, some choose a hand together, and some wear their rings on different hands. The ring finger matters more than the rule.

One practical tip before you buy

Your right and left hands are not always the same size. For most right-handed people, the right ring finger is a little bigger, sometimes by half a size. So measure the finger the ring will actually live on.

That matters most for rings with diamonds along the band, because a pavé band is harder to resize than a plain one. Not sure how to choose a style? Our guide on how to choose an engagement ring walks through shape, setting and metal.
