One pendant, three moods: in the box, on the neck, and on a lazy Sunday.

A diamond pendant is the piece people reach for when a moment matters: a first anniversary, a new baby, a "you made it" after a hard year. It is also the piece people worry about most before buying. How big should the diamond be? Which chain? Will she actually wear it?

Quick answer: a diamond pendant necklace is a chain with a single hanging piece set with one or more diamonds. To choose a good one, decide on the style first (solitaire, circle, cross, heart or symbol), then pick a diamond size that looks right for her neck, the gold colour she already wears, and a chain of about 45 cm. For everyday wear, a well-cut diamond of 0.25 to 0.75 ct in 14K or 18K gold is the sweet spot. You can see two of ours, the diamond circle pendant and the diamond cross necklace.

Below is everything we explain to people at our counter in Yerevan, where we have been setting diamonds by hand since 2010: the styles, what carat size really looks like, how to clean a diamond pendant at home, and the questions people forget to ask.

What is a diamond pendant necklace?

A pendant is the part that hangs. The necklace is the chain it hangs from. So a diamond pendant necklace is simply a chain with a diamond piece on it, as opposed to a tennis necklace, where diamonds run all the way along the chain itself.

That difference matters more than it sounds. A pendant puts all the sparkle in one spot, right below the collarbone, which is why it looks elegant even with a single small stone. It is also easier to wear every day, and you can change the chain whenever you like.

Diamond pendant necklace styles

Most diamond pendants fall into one of these styles. On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Style What it looks like Feels like Best for
Solitaire One diamond in a small claw or bezel setting Classic, quiet, timeless Everyday wear, a first diamond
Halo A centre stone ringed by small diamonds Bigger sparkle for the size Evenings, a "wow" gift
Circle (eternity) An open circle with diamonds all the way around Forever, lasting love Anniversaries
Cross Diamonds set along the arms of a cross Faith, family tradition Baptisms, birthdays, daily wear
Heart A heart outline or a heart-shaped diamond Romantic, sweet Valentine's Day, a partner
Symbol A tree, an initial, a family figure, with diamond accents Personal, meaningful Mothers, family gifts

The diamond solitaire pendant necklace

The diamond solitaire pendant necklace is the little black dress of jewellery. One stone, nothing else, so the diamond has to do all the work. That is why the cut matters more here than anywhere: a well-cut 0.30 ct stone can look brighter than a poorly cut half carat. Round brilliant is the classic shape because it gives back the most sparkle, but oval and pear look lovely too and appear a little larger for their weight.

Love and meaningful pendant necklaces

A love pendant necklace does not have to be a heart. A circle says forever, a cross can carry a family's faith, a tree can stand for roots. The most meaningful pendant necklace is the one that matches a real story: hers, yours or her family's. If the shape you have in mind does not exist yet, we can make it. Every piece in our custom gold jewelry service starts from exactly that kind of idea.

How to choose a diamond pendant necklace

1. Pick a diamond size that looks right, not just big

On a pendant, a diamond sits about 30 cm from anyone looking at it, so a modest stone still reads clearly. As a rough guide:

  • 0.10 to 0.25 ct: delicate and easy to wear every day, lovely for layering.
  • 0.30 to 0.75 ct: the most popular range, clearly visible without looking like a statement piece.
  • 1 ct and above: a real statement, best on a slightly stronger chain.

If a pendant has several stones, the number you see is the total carat weight: all the stones added together. Our diamond circle carries 0.75 ct in total and our diamond cross 1.65 ct, spread across many small diamonds for an all-over sparkle. The Gemological Institute of America explains how carat, cut, colour and clarity work together.

2. Put cut first, then colour and clarity

Cut decides the sparkle, so spend there first. For colour and clarity, a pendant is forgiving: nobody inspects a necklace with a loupe. A near-colourless stone with no marks you can see with the naked eye looks just as bright on the neck as a much pricier "flawless" one.

3. Choose the gold she already wears

White gold makes diamonds look brighter and icier. Yellow gold looks warm and classic and makes the stones stand out by contrast. The easiest rule: look at the jewellery she wears most and match it. We make pendants in 14K and 18K gold. 14K is harder and ideal for daily wear; 18K has more pure gold and a richer colour.

4. Get the chain length right

For most women, 45 cm (18 inches) is the classic length for a diamond pendant: it sits on or just below the collarbone and shows with most necklines. 46 to 48 cm leaves a little more room for the pendant, and 50 cm suits higher necklines and bigger pieces. Not sure? Measure a necklace she already wears and likes, end to end. Our fine 18K white gold chain comes in every length from 45 to 50 cm.

Natural or lab-grown diamonds?

Both are real diamonds with the same hardness and sparkle. Lab-grown stones cost much less. Natural diamonds are rarer, tend to hold their value better and carry the story of being formed in the earth. The diamonds in our circle and cross pendants are natural. Whatever you choose, ask the seller to tell you which one it is in writing, and if you ever need to check a stone, here is our guide on how to tell if a diamond is real.

How to clean a diamond pendant

Diamonds love grease. Hand cream, perfume and skin oils stick to the back of the stone and make even a big diamond look dull. Good news: cleaning one at home takes ten minutes.

  1. Soak the pendant for 15 to 20 minutes in warm (not hot) water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid.
  2. Brush gently behind and around the stones with a soft baby toothbrush. That is where the dirt hides.
  3. Rinse under warm running water, with the sink plug in. Trust us on the plug.
  4. Dry with a lint-free or microfibre cloth, then let it air-dry before you put it away.

Skip bleach, chlorine, toothpaste and baking soda: they can scratch the gold or loosen settings. And do the same thing for your rings: how to clean an engagement ring is exactly the same routine, just with a little extra brushing under the centre stone.

Once or twice a year, let a jeweller check the claws. A loose claw is easy to fix, and a lost diamond is not.

Can you wear a diamond pendant every day?

Yes, that is what most of them are made for. Put the necklace on after perfume and lotion, take it off for the gym, the pool and the sea, and store it on its own in a soft pouch so the chain does not tangle and the diamonds do not scratch other pieces. Treat the chain kindly: the pendant is tough, but a thin chain can snap if it catches on a jumper.

Made for you, not off a shelf
