Half Eternity vs Full Eternity Ring: Which Should You Choose?

Our half eternity ring in yellow gold: diamonds across the top, smooth gold underneath.

Ten years married, a small box on the breakfast table, and a line of diamonds that never seems to end. That is the idea behind an eternity ring: a love that keeps going. The only question is whether the diamonds should go all the way round, or just across the top.

Quick answer: in the half eternity vs full eternity choice, the difference is how far the diamonds go. A half eternity ring has diamonds across the top half of the band only, with plain gold underneath. A full eternity ring has diamonds all the way around. A half eternity ring is more comfortable, easier to resize and uses fewer diamonds, so it costs less. A full eternity ring sparkles from every angle, but it usually cannot be resized. You can see the half eternity style in our half eternity ring in yellow gold and white gold.

Below is everything that separates the two, from the people who set the diamonds by hand in Yerevan.

What is an eternity ring?

An eternity ring, or eternity band, is a ring set with a continuous line of diamonds of the same size and cut. There is no centre stone. The unbroken row is the whole design.

The meaning is in the name. A line of diamonds with no beginning and no end stands for a love that lasts. That is why eternity rings are a classic gift for a big anniversary, the birth of a first child, or a wedding band in their own right.

There are two main types, and the difference is simple: how far around the band the diamonds go.

What is a half eternity ring?

A half eternity ring has diamonds across the top half of the band, the part you see when you look at your hand. The underside, the part that sits against your palm and your other fingers, is plain gold.

Our half eternity rings, for example, have round diamonds across the front, 0.50 ct in total, on a band of 14K gold that weighs about 3.4 g. From the front, it looks like a full line of light. From the side, it is smooth and comfortable.

The half eternity ring meaning is exactly the same as a full one. Same promise, same symbol. Only the setting is different.

What is a full eternity ring?

A full eternity ring has diamonds set all the way around the band, with no plain gold at all. Whichever way the ring turns on your finger, you see diamonds.

It is the most complete version of the idea, and it is beautiful. It also comes with a few practical trade-offs, which are worth knowing before you buy one.

Half eternity vs full eternity: side by side

Here is how the two compare on the things that matter day to day. On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Half eternity ring Full eternity ring
Diamonds Across the top half All the way around
Comfort Smooth gold against the palm and other fingers Stones touch the fingers next to it
Resizing Usually possible, through the plain gold Usually not possible, it has to be made again
Cost Lower, fewer diamonds Higher, roughly twice the diamonds
Sparkle From the front, where people look From every angle, even if it spins
Daily wear Easy, even with busy hands Lower stones take more knocks
Best for Everyday wear, stacking, a wedding band A statement anniversary ring, worn with care

Comfort and daily wear

This is where most people decide. The underside of a ring rubs against the fingers next to it all day, every day. On a full eternity ring, that underside is diamonds and settings, so it can feel a little rough, especially when you wear it next to an engagement ring.

Those lower diamonds also take the most hits. Carrying bags, holding a steering wheel, typing, gripping a gym bar: the palm side of a ring is where the knocks land. On a half eternity ring, that part is solid gold, which simply gets a little polish over the years.

If you wear your rings every day and use your hands a lot, the half eternity is the more practical choice.

Can you resize a full eternity ring?

Usually, no. To resize a ring, a jeweller cuts the band and adds or removes a little gold. On a half eternity ring, that happens in the plain gold underneath, and the diamonds are not touched.

A full eternity ring has no plain section to cut. Every part of the band holds a stone, so resizing would mean breaking the settings. In practice, a full eternity ring that no longer fits usually has to be made again.

So if your finger size might change, for example with pregnancy or the seasons, a half eternity ring is the safer buy. If you choose a full eternity ring, measure very carefully first. Our guide on which hand a wedding ring goes on explains why your right and left ring fingers can be different sizes.

Price and carat weight

A full eternity ring holds roughly twice as many diamonds as a half eternity ring with the same stones, so the total carat weight and the price go up with it.

When you compare eternity rings, look at the total carat weight, written as "ct total" or "ctw". It is the weight of all the diamonds together, not the size of one stone. The Gemological Institute of America explains how diamond carat weight works. A half eternity ring of 0.50 ct total and a full one of 1.00 ct total can look very similar from the front.

Half eternity ring as a wedding band

Yes, a half eternity ring works beautifully as a wedding band. It sits flat next to an engagement ring, the plain gold underneath does not rub against it, and the diamonds across the front continue the sparkle of the main stone.

It pairs especially well with a solitaire. Our round solitaire engagement ring in yellow gold and the half eternity ring in the same gold make a matching set, and the white gold half eternity sits flush next to our classic solitaire. For more ideas, read our guide to pairing a solitaire with a wedding band.

A full eternity ring can be a wedding band too. It just tends to rub more against the engagement ring next to it.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose a half eternity ring if you will wear it every day, stack it with an engagement ring, use your hands a lot, or want the option to resize later.
  • Choose a full eternity ring if you want diamonds from every angle, wear it mostly on its own, and are sure of your size.

Still unsure? Most people who wear their rings daily end up happiest with a half eternity ring, because from the front, where everyone looks, the two look almost the same.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a half eternity and a full eternity ring?
A half eternity ring has diamonds across the top half of the band, with plain gold underneath. A full eternity ring has diamonds all the way around. The meaning is the same; the comfort, price and resizing options are different.

Is a half eternity ring a wedding band?
It can be. Many women wear a half eternity ring as their wedding band, next to the engagement ring. It is also given as an anniversary ring or worn on its own.

Can you resize a half eternity ring?
Usually yes, by about one size up or down, because the jeweller works on the plain gold underneath. Bigger changes are harder, so it is still best to order the right size.

What does an eternity ring mean?
An unbroken line of diamonds stands for a love without end. Eternity rings are often given for a milestone anniversary or the birth of a child, but the meaning is whatever you make it.

Which is more comfortable, half or full eternity?
A half eternity ring. The plain gold underneath is smooth against the palm and the fingers on either side, while a full eternity ring has stones all the way around.
